Steve Kos is a partner in our Business Litigation and Health Law practice groups. He has been practicing law for eleven years.
Why did Steve choose to work at Rupp Pfalzgraf?
Steve chose Rupp Pfalzgraf because he is a big believer in Buffalo and our community. Prior to joining Rupp Pfalzgraf, he had a sense of our community involvement, seeing us at different events and sponsoring different events. Then coming here and joining the practice, he is very impressed with Rupp Pfalzgraf’s community involvement. Our firm sponsors many events and organizations that are near and dear to Steve’s heart. A big one is Ride for Roswell, and our firm does great work for the Ride each year. He wanted to work somewhere that cared about the Buffalo community as much as he does, and that’s why he chose to work at Rupp Pfalzgraf.
Within his practice, what type of work does Steve find the most rewarding?
The work that Steve finds most rewarding is being able to help a client in a time of need. He used to be a public defender in criminal court, helping people with misdemeanors and felonies. Now here at Rupp Pfalzgraf and over the last five to six years as a civil litigator, he can help a business when they’ve been wronged or when they’re facing a lawsuit. He also finds it rewarding to help clients with guardianships within the practice of Health Law. A guardianship is when somebody becomes unable to care for their personal needs and property interest, and families usually don’t know what to do in that situation. So, they come to us here in our Health Law group, and we’re able to guide them and show them that things will be okay and their loved ones will be taken care of.
What is a fun fact about Steve that people may be surprised to learn?
Some people may be surprised to learn that Steve enjoys cooking. In the fall he likes to hang out on his back patio, watch college football, and use his smoker. In the fall he makes a mean brisket or pulled pork, or a pretty good pot of chicken noodle soup in the winter. If you tried some of Steve’s cooking, you’d be impressed!
What is Steve’s best legal tip?
Steve’s legal tip is that above all else, you should be honest with your lawyer. You shouldn’t hide anything from your lawyer because everything you say is protected by attorney-client privilege. From the outset, a lawyer needs to know the strengths and weaknesses of each case, so facts should not be embellished or construed. Just tell it straight to your lawyer, because it’s your attorney’s job to use the facts to best support your case to your advantage.
